I’m Not Religious, But I Still Have Beliefs

I am not religiousThat’s right, I said it. I don’t identify myself as religious, however I am definitely not Atheist either.

So what does that mean?

When someone asks me what my beliefs are, it’s not easy to answer. I don’t say, “I’m (fill in the blank)” and them just understand what that means. I have to literally explain what I believe. I’m often left feeling like I just made something up on the spot after I’m done explaining. It feels as though I need to be part of an organized religion for my beliefs to be taken seriously.

Some People Don’t Respect Your BELIEFS

I can recall a time when I was having a discussion with someone close to me who is Christian.  She was sharing her opinion on a subject, unrelated to religion particularly, however her religion influenced her belief on the subject.  I in turn shared my own opinion on the subject, thinking this was a two-way conversation, but was met with a statement that still bothers me to this day. She said, “What you just said goes against everything I believe.”

Are you f*cking kidding me?

I just sat in silence as the conversation moved on.  She acted as though my own beliefs offended her, yet was completely oblivious to the fact that she had just dismissed mine.  I found it so inconsiderate, especially after just listening to her opinion with an open mind.

Non-Traditional Beliefs

Everyone has the right to their own beliefs, myself included, even if that means I don’t fall under a religious “category.” I don’t judge anyone for their beliefs and shouldn’t be judged for mine. At the very least, don’t be ignorant when I express my opinion just because it isn’t in line with your own.

Some people I know (not all) who identify as religious are very judgmental and sometimes condescending.  If someone behaves in a way that is not in line with their religious beliefs, they make sure to express their disapproval.  Additionally, they always seem to be unaware of how self-righteous their judgment on others is.

Religion is about personal choices and lifestyle, not condemning others who choose a different belief system or a different path in life.

Whatever God you believe in, we come from the same one. – Macklemore

Religious Or Not- It’s A Personal choice

My point is, we are free to believe, or not believe, whatever we want. I’m not a bad person because I don’t follow mainstream religion, or any for that matter. I believe how I want, and I will allow my children to make up their own minds as well. Teaching them to be kind and considerate people is my main priority.

So if I choose to believe in something that may seem unconventional, don’t judge me for it and respect the fact that my values and opinions have merit too.

    1. You should, I’d love to read it! I think there are many people with similar “non-traditional” beliefs but I don’t think they’re talked about as much because it’s so personal to each person, rather than shared with a large community of people who believe in the same thing.
